November Grid Alive!

Start
Hosted by Grid publisher Alex Mulcahy and Nic Esposito founder of The Head & The Hand publishers, November’s Grid Alive featured a wide range of topics, from construction waste to home energy efficiency. As doors opened at 6 p.m., guests were treated to a snack spread by Rolling Barrel Events and table exhibitions that included event sponsor Clean Currents, as well as Solar States, Bennet Compost, Energy Coordinating Agency and University of Pennsylvania’s Masters of Environmental Science.

Special guest Water Commissioner Howard Neukrug, who graced the cover of Grid’s December issue, talked about the history of Philadelphia’s water department, its evolution, and its continuous efforts to ensuring the city has clean, safe, responsibly sourced water, especially the Green City, Clean Waters initiative. Also interviewed was construction waste recycling leader Avi Golen, cofounder of Revolution Recovery, who revealed that the U.S construction industry is responsible for 45% of waste in landfills. Fortunately, according to Golen, most of this waste can be recycled and Revolution Recovery is a testament to the fact that being environmentally responsible can be very cost effective, and prices of green products and services can be very competitive with less sustainable goods and services.

Other guests included Elliot Gold of Philadelphia Gas Works’ Energy Efficiency Programs, a program that incentivizes energy efficiency in homes and businesses, and Janet Milkman of Delaware Valley Green Building Council who discussed the upcoming Greenbuild Expo. Entertainment was provided by Sarah Grey in form of a reading from The Rust Belt Rising Almanac, and the event ended with guests lining up for ice cream graciously sponsored by Little Baby’s Ice Cream.

Although Grid Alive will not return till January 2014, you can join us on December 12 at the Reading Terminal Market for a joint Grid January issue release party and Sustainable Business Network Holiday Party.
