Calling All Green-Thumbed South Philadelphians

One of last year's garden tour participantsIn anticipation of its third annual South Philly Garden Tour this fall, the South Philly Food Co-op is in search of a few good gardeners to volunteer to show off their green spaces large and small, from rooftop oases to alleyways, backyards and balconies.

This year's self-guided tour of private home gardens will be held Saturday, September 7 from 1 to 5 p.m., and the Co-op seeks participants from the South Broad Street corridor — 11th to 17th streets, Washington to Snyder. To participate, submit the following information by August 1, 2013 to events@southphillyfoodcoop.org:
  • A brief description of your garden (as you would like it to be published in the pamphlet), 5 to 75 words
  • An interesting fact about your garden
  • A photo or two to show off your space
The Co-op's mission is to open a member-owned cooperative grocery store that makes good food available at a fair price to all residents of South Philadelphia, while empowering the local community through sustainable practices, food-centric education, outreach and community building. The Co-op is 480-plus members strong, and the Garden Tour helps raise funds that will go toward opening the grocery store.
