How much do you love your neighborhood park? Philadelphia Parks and Recreation and the Fairmount Park Conservancy, are asking Philadelphians to show their affection during the second annual Love Your Park Week, a celebration of the city’s vast park system featuring service projects, family activities, plant sales, workshops and tours. The week kicks off with a Spring Service Day on Saturday, May 11, where over 100 neighborhood park groups will clean up, plant, and beautify our city’s parks. Volunteers can sign up online and get assigned to a park, where Love Your Park will provide tools, t-shirts and banners.
Over the following week, events will continue at parks throughout the city, including the May 14th opening of Pleasant Hill Park, a waterfront park in the Northeast with a fish hatchery that will serve 2000 youth during summer programs where they will learn how to fish. Saturday, May 18th, will feature open barns at Fairmount Park stables, where Philadelphians can meet the horses, watch equine demonstrations and learn about horse riding and care.
Sponsored by the Ace Charitable Foundation and Novacare Rehabilitation, the Love Your Park celebration will also include a Show Us Your Love contest, which encourages Philadelphians to send photos, videos, poems or short stories that illustrate how they love their park. The winning entry receives a party in their favorite park. Visit the Love Your Park website for a full calendar of events, to enter the contest, and to find a participating park to volunteer at on May 11.
