The Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia will launches the 2013 season of its award-winning Architectural Walking Tours Saturday, May 4 at 10 a.m. with a tour of Littlest Streets Fitler Square and a special tour for Jane Jacobs Walk, an annual commemoration of the birthday of the great urban thinker Jane Jacobs (1916-2006).

The event will start off with a brief "birthday party," followed by a FREE guided walking tour of Littlest Streets Fitler Square. Meet at the center of Fitler Square, 23rd & Pine Sts. Jane Jacobs Walk is a program of the Center for the Living City, a nonprofit organization created by friends of  urban activist and writer Jane Jacobs (The Death and Life of Great American Cities), who championed the interests of local residents and pedestrians over a car-centered approach to planning. www.janejacobswalk.org. The organization celebrates Jacobs' life and legacy by helping people organize walks in their communities around the time of Jane's birthday in early May.

The Walking Tours will run, rain or shine, Saturdays at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., Sundays at 2 p.m. and Wednesdays at 6 p.m. from May through October (see partial schedule, below). Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for students with ID, free for children 10 and under accompanied by an adult. Reservations are not required, but tickets may be purchased in advance at the Philadelphia Visitor Centers or online at www.phlvisitorcenter.com/tour/preservation-alliance-greater-philadelphia-arc hitectural-walking-tour.

Tours range from Center City locales, including Society Hill and Rittenhouse Square, to notable neighborhoods such as South of South, Fishtown and Callowhill. There are specialized themed tours such as Lewis and Clark in Philadelphia, Bankers' Heaven, and Art Deco and even a walk over the Ben Franklin Bridge. Preservation Alliance Walking Tours are led by a lively group of experienced and enthusiastic volunteers from a wide range of backgrounds who share a passion for architecture, urban design and social history. Their passion and knowledge has enhanced understanding of the region's architectural heritage for thousands of participants and has received awards and accolades. Philadelphia magazine honored the walking tours with a 2008 "Best of Philly" Award, noting they are the "best reason to take a walk."  Tour descriptions: www.preservationalliance.com/events/walking_tours_descriptions.php Contact Info for publication: tours@preservationalliance.com or 215-546-1146 x3.  The Preservation Alliance The Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia actively promotes the appreciation, protection, and revitalization of the Philadelphia region's historic buildings, communities, and landscapes. www.preservationalliance.com
