Book Review: Hollywood Rides a Bike

story by Liz PachecoHollywood Rides a Bike: Cycling with the Stars, by Steven Rea, Angel City Press, 160 pp., $20.

Take a ride back in time and pay homage to classic wheels. Steven Rea, film critic for the Philadelphia INquirer and professor at Drexel University, initially took his love for cinema and cycling to the internet in NOvember 2010 with the Tumblr "Rides a Bike." After developing cult-like following, Rea has brought this fascinating collection to print, providing a great glimpse into the bike culture of Hollywood's finest. Boasting high quality, mostly black and white photos, as well as a bikes and stars index, Hollywood Rides a Bike is a timeless treasure to add to your collection. -- Liz Pacheco

During one of my debilitated days under chemotherapy, I happened to be leaving the checkout lines at the grocery store when Steven and I saw one another (acquaintances for twenty years or so). As my drug-induced exhaustion increased in preparing to walk just three blocks home, I sought assistance (I am sure I was not obviously weak) in the light of the added effort of carrying my shoulder sacks of food. Knowing that they lived a good bit more distant than I did, I asked if he could drop me off as he passed by my house. "Of course I would! But I'm on my BIKE…" I had ignored what I knew for ages about Steven Rea and cycling! …can't wait until I'm confident that I can ride again.
