No Limits: Green Building’s Reach

Start

Another reminder (thanks to philly.com) that green building is not tied to one neighborhood or organization in Philadelphia. Over the past couple years, a number of sleek, energy-efficient buildings have been constructed in unexpected spots outside of Center City. Here’s another: the Mercy Neighborhood Ministries of Philadelphia Inc.’s state of the art building in the Nicetown-Tioga section of North Philly.

Run by the Sisters of Mercy, the organization is a non-profit that offers a number of adult and childcare programs to break the cycle of poverty and empower individuals.

Their building was formally an abandoned warehouse. Purchased by the organization in 2004, it reopened in 2009 as the first LEED Silver-certified building in North Philly. Building features include a white roof, staff living quarters outfitted with EnergyStar appliances, energy-efficient lighting and an outdoor garden area.
